Last week, I dropped a podcast with Robb Gilbear, a multi-six-figure business coach who's mentored over 400 entrepreneurs. The goal of my podcast isn't the podcast itself, but the clips that result from it. But let me tell you where I went wrong with Robb. I had just come across a great video framework, and I was set on using it. But the problem is that Robb is a super creative guy. And we ended up boxing in his creativity by trying to put him into this rigid framework. We kinda struggled through it a bit with him doing a bunch of takes, and it took us about 15 minutes, but we nailed it. A few days later, I got this voice message from Robb... "I’ve been thinking about it nonstop since our session. At first I was like, no, you’re just overthinking it.
But a week later, I can’t shake the feeling...The reality is, I don’t want our episode to be shared. I’d be embarrassed if any of it went out."
Then he explains some of the reasons: tight timeline, tech issues, weird energy, and ends with...
“It was super scripted. I was mostly just repeating what you were telling me to say. I don’t feel good about it. I wouldn’t feel good if it were published.”
This message hit me hard. And I thought... How many others have felt this way but were too scared to admit it? Now I'm feeling sick over this. So I went back to Robb, admitting my mistake, and asked him for another chance. Thankfully he could tell that I actually gave a shit and was willing to give it another go. We took a completely different approach the second time. I did some research and came up with a list of questions. I advised Robb to just answer them. No prep, no frameworks, no hooks, no overthinking. At the end of the session, he felt so great about the content that he was asking about the price to do more. And this time, we got 8 clips in 18 minutes instead of struggling for 20 minutes to get one clip. Here's what Rob had to say after seeing the content... I'm so glad we did a second go at this. Because I learned that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for working with clients. Some people need more structure Some people need more freedom. Some people need more support. Since that session, I've been taking the same approach with some of our other clients, and the videos are on a different level. I guess you could say the new-and-improved version of Video on Easy Mode. If you want to get 8 video posts in 18 minutes that will grow your brand and business on LinkedIn without feeling worried or embarrassed about posting them... I was hanging out with homey, Travis, yesterday. He's a seasoned entrepreneur who's owned several businesses. He asked me how things were going. Business is growing. Boys are getting older. Life is good. Yes. Things are moving in the right directon but I'm still digging out of a hole. See, before I started my business, I put myself in a pretty deep financial hole. And while I've made a lot of progress over the last 3 years, I'm still climbing. My wife asks about the house. "When are we...
I was on a Zoom with 12 people who hired me, and I noticed a pattern I had never seen this clearly before. On Monday, we did the kickoff call for the Content on Easy Mode Community. To help everyone get to know each other, we went around the room and did introductions. I didn’t even ask this question, but people started volunteering how they found me and why they joined. Here’s what shocked me: 4 people first discovered me because I presented inside communities they were already part of(and...
I go to the gym every morning. Part of my workout is a 30-40 minute cardio session. I used to do the treadmill, but I hurt my ankle, so I've been on the elliptical. (I'm getting old.) 😢 For the last 3 years, while I do cardio, I've been watching TV shows. I decided to change that up this year. Started last week. Instead of TV shows, I've been watching YouTube videos. All stuff related to my business. How to create better content, how to generate more leads, trends in the social media world I...
